What does every good marketer really do? He creates relationships. She make friends. When you begin to think of marketing in this way, everything about marketing becomes more fun. Suddenly there is no foreignness, no fear, no feelings of inadequacy. We can all make friends. It's a talent we've had since we were little children. Use it.
Always do your best. And always, always have fun.

While I don't disagree with most of what Seth says, especially the lack of promotional resources at big publishers, you also have to temper what he says with a bit of realism about your book's topic and audience. Not all non-fiction books are "idea books", after all. As well, some books are very narrowly focused and simply can't expect to sell tens of thousands of copies, no matter how good your promotional techniques. Of course, every author wants to sell as many copies of their books as possible -- why else are you reading this blog? -- but it's not necessarily the primary goal, just a nice bonus.
