What does every good marketer really do? He creates relationships. She make friends. When you begin to think of marketing in this way, everything about marketing becomes more fun. Suddenly there is no foreignness, no fear, no feelings of inadequacy. We can all make friends. It's a talent we've had since we were little children. Use it.

Always do your best. And always, always have fun.

PMA's Loss: Jan Nathan
I heard today that Jan Nathan, long-time director of Publishers Marketing Association, has died of cancer after a year-long battle.

Jan was a sweetheart, an incredibly talented and dedicated association executive, and a good friend. I will miss her a lot.

If you have benefited at all from PMA's programs, PMA University, Ben Franklin awards, distribution program, etc., you have Jan to thank for a lot of that.

Here is an image of her that I found online:

Again, I can't tell you how much I will miss her and her good heart.

Here's another photo of her. Always a good person full of fun.

Jan was an inspiration and an energy force for all authors and publishers everywhere. Her dynamics will be missed, but her spirit will live on in the incredible staff she built around her.

John,

Thanks for writing so thoughtfully about Jan Nathan -- a beautiful spirit and an able spokesperson for independent publishing.

PMA has opened a memorial site for Jan where folks can share a quick thought or browse tributes from the likes of Publishers Weekly, The L.A. Times, Foreword Magazine and others.
