Hi John,
I found 99 designs absolutely brilliant. I had a book cover and logo designed in 2 separate contests - you can see them both at www.familiesfacingcancer.org.
One thing I would say is to set aside sufficient time. I had the contest running for a week, and needed to check the designs daily and leave feedback for the designers. I got better results by doing this, and I love the fact that neither looks anything like I had imagined at the beginning - they are far better!

Interesting post John, especially since I'm going back into the graphic design business after taking a hiatus for a few years.
I checked out the website, and it's all about working on spec. Back when I was in graphic design school we were taught to never work on spec. It was considered unethical.
Still, it was an interesting website. Thanks for alerting me to it.
